The Pulse of Bognor
The talk of the town....
The good and the not so good....
We've been asking Bognorians what's on their mind...
We asked if they believe that art and culture could help change things.
This is a sample of what we're hearing...
Crime Rates
"We'll achieve nothing until we get a grip on rising crime in Bognor".
"I know some businesses are trying their best to stop it but they need more support".
Public Services
"I can't find an NHS dentist and I can't get a doctor's appointment for 3 weeks; I was on the phone for an hour last week just trying to see the nurse".
Cost of Living
" I'd like a healthy diet but it's just too expensive. I don't know what I'd do without the food bank and I'm so grateful but I hate feeling dependent on others".
Parking
"Parking in Bognor is becoming a nightmare, even when I take my mobility scooter".
Regeneration
"The Council say they're keen on listening but they just go through the motions and make decisions that we'll later come to regret".
"All the decent efforts to revive Bognor just seem to grind to a halt - and now the high-powered Regeneration Board is closing down for financial reasons. It seems hopeless"
The Regis Centre
"We'd like to think that those involved are doing it for the whole of Bognor and not just for themselves".
"It would be great for the town if a member of the Royal Family could open it for us".
The Arcade
"If we're not careful, we'll miss a great opportunity to provide community spaces that could make a big difference".
"It needs a proper caretaker to look after it for the whole community".
The Pier
"The pier is so important to Bognor but it's in disrepair and needs all our support to just survive",
"I loved Mike Jupp's idea for the Crystal Pier (and the dolphins); whatever happened to that?"
"Look at what they did in Hastings. Why can't we do the same for Bognor?",
Waterloo Square
"For 10 years now, I've felt ashamed that we've had a building site in the heart of Bognor. I even apologise to my friends when we walk past it".
The Ancient Mariners
"The ancient mariners would be turning in their graves if they could see it now"'.
The Landing Place
"Just when we thought we were getting somewhere it seems to have all gone pear-shaped".
Arun District Council
"I love our Councillors when we meet them individually, they seem to understand us, but then they seem to undergo a personality transplant when they step inside the Council Chambers"
"I understand that all Councils are under pressure but it's sad that the first things to go when things get tough are imaginative thinking about the longer term and involving the public. These are the very things that are needed more than ever".
Butlins
"Butlin's feels like a separate community to Bognor, always has and I don't see it changing. It's a shame".
Hotham Park Lorry Park
"Not sure what's happening there but I expect it'll go the same way as all the other developments. Developers, lawyers and rich people will be the only ones who gain"
Cafe Culture
"It's great to see so many new cafes opening up around town but it's so hard for young entrepreneurs to make a go of it without support. Look at what happened to The Landing Place".
Art and Culture
"Art is a great way to bridge differences. We all love art in one way or another, even if it's a bit edgy but it is a great way to express ourselves. And Bognor has more than it's share of really creative people".
Sea Water Quality
"I think Southern Water have let us down for too long now. I don't mind paying slightly higher water bills if they can guarantee to stop shitting up our water".
The Good Old Days
"Bognor's not what it used to be. It seems to have lost it's sense of identity and self-respect. I can remember when people used to look out for each other but those days are gone. It feels like we're struggling and don't know what to do about it. It makes me so sad".
On the future
"Despite everything, Bognor is a beautiful place - we still have the glorious sunsets over Aldwick Bay and the people are lovely. It's our home and I wouldn't live anywhere else. Like anything we care about it's worth looking after it".
